Charles was a 35 year old farmer of Gilgandra when he enlisted on January 4, 1916. He embarked from Sydney on the HMAT Ceramic on April 14, 1916. He served in the Western front with the 54th Battalion and was in Le Verguier, France when he was killed in action on March 29, 1917. He is buried at Morchies Australian Cemetery, France. His headstone reads;
