KELLY Private Frederick 749
Frederick was a 21 year old labourer when he enlisted in Sydney on 1 September 1914. He was 5;8” tall, 11 stone (70kgs), chest 33”-37”, reddish complexion, blue eyes and red hair. He was Methodist and his mother, Mrs Mary Jane Kelly of the Mudgee district was his next of kin. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A14 ‘Euripides’ on 19 October 1914 with the 3rd Battalion. They arrived in Egypt on 2 December 1914 and were among the first on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.
Frederick was wounded with shrapnel to the left eye and was evacuated to Pot Said on the ‘Gabka’. He returned to Gallipoli and was killed in action 7 August 1915. He is presumed to be buried in the Lone Pine
Mary Jane Kelly was a widow when her boys went to war and a poignant letter points out that she now has no-one. She requested the personal effects of Frederick, but unfortunately there were no effects available to return to her.
She received the Memorial Plaques, Memorial Scrolls and the boy’s medals, the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Cemetery but his grave is unidentified.
