Richard stated he was a 21 year old labourer of Gilgandra when he enlisted on 16 February 1915 in Sydney, but he was 18 years old and had just left school. He was the youngest of four sons, three died young and his mother died when Richard was 2 years old. His father was Alex Biggs of Astermeddi, Gilgandra NSW.
Richard trained in Sydney and embarked on board Transport A40 ‘Ceramic’ on 25 June 1915. He arrived in Gallipoli with the 18th Battalion. They arrived in Gallipoli in August 1915 to face the August Offensive with about 1000 men and after it was over the Battalion could only muster 386 men. Richard was missing in action. A Court of Inquiry was held in France in September 1917 and he was declared killed in action on 21 August 1915 at Hill 60 Gallipoli. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial.
