Sergeant Francis Attwood was a 38 year old contractor of Bearbong Gilgandra when he enlisted in Sydney on August 26, 1914. He was married with 5 children under the age of 5. He had previous experience with the Mounted Infantry Rifles in Africa. He embarked as Lance Corporal on the ‘Euripides’ in October 1914 and returned to Australia on August 27, 1917 after serving in Gallipoli and France.
